History of The Wolves

Eschol Park Soccer Club

During late 1982 I was working with a couple of mates who lived in Eschol Park and Raby, who were talking about starting a new soccer club in the area and as I was moving there in early 1983, they invited me to attend an informal meeting to discuss ideas on how they could organize a club.   This meeting was held in the garage of one of these people in Eschol Park Drive – over a couple of beers, matters discussed included club name and colours, how they could arrange to get playing fields, get players to join and membership of the association etc.   This was the first meeting that I attended but obviously some ground work had already been done previously.   Those present at this meeting were Allan Menzies, Michael Kirby, Bruce Ramsay, myself and a couple of others that unfortunately I cannot recall.

The club was named Eschol Park Soccer Club and the colours were yellow shirts with maroon trim, maroon shorts and yellow socks.   The future meetings of the club were to be held at the Silo’s in Eschol Park Drive.

Over the years the faces on the committee have changed but the commitment of its members to the objectives of the club always remains the same.

The club was set up to provide a safe place for the local children to go and play soccer.   This has been achieved and can be measured by the number of players who pass through the various age groups and then eventually bring their own children back to play at our club.

The club was officially formed in 1983 and was part of the newly formed Macarthur District Soccer Football Association along with the following clubs:
  • Camden Tigers,
  • Campbelltown Police boys,
  • Macarthur Raiders,
  • Ingleburn RSL,
  • Campbelltown RSL,
  • Johnson & Johnson Lions (now Leppington Lions),
  • Bradbury Ambarvale,
  • Narellan Rangers,
  • Tahmoor Nepean,
  • Burragorang,
  • Campbelltown Collegians,
  • Campbelltown Districts (now Gunners),
  • Campbelltown City,
  • Minto,
  • Macquarie Fields,
  • Picton,
  • Ruse, and
  • Camcraft.

The first game played in the association was a junior game between Camden Tigers, being the oldest club and Eschol Park, the newest club.   The game was kicked off by former Australian soccer legend Les Schineflug.

During the first season we had a number of issues to overcome – we shared the first basin with Rugby League, 1 full size field each.   There were no home games for the first 6 weeks of the competition as council had laid new grass on the playing fields just prior to the start of the season.   We had a first and reserve grade squad and a couple of junior teams.   The early canteen for the all age games was a combi van parked down on the sideline selling drinks, chips and lollies!!   The first presentation day was held on vacant land where Eschol Park Primary School now stands.

In 1984 the club had mini teams for the first time and we needed to arrange fields for them to play on, a system incorporating 2 fields in one is setup behind the main field at the car park end of basin 1.   6’s and 7’s play length ways behind the main field and when their last game is finished the portable goal posts are rearranged so that the under 8’s fields run cross ways behind the main field.

The job of equipment officer in those early years was very demanding, the equipment had to be loaded onto a trailer taken down the ground, set up and packed up at the end of the day.

Our canteen was a tent that needed to be erected each Saturday morning, a gas operated pie oven and other gas operated equipment was used as we were to far away from any power.

With the area developing rapidly, so too did the soccer club – being the only club this side of the freeway we had players from all around joining and we soon outgrew our 1 field setup.   After plenty of lobbying with council, we soon had the second basin for ourselves, 2 main fields and dedicated fields for each mini age group, 6, 7 and 8’s.   We also have a new canteen and amenities block.

In 1987 the club became incorporated, the long process of working out rules and regulations as well as by-laws etc. is finally finished and takes the legal responsibility away from individuals on the committee.

In early 1992 during the off season our amenities block between basins 1 & 2 was destroyed by fire – all of our equipment including shirts, balls, nets etc. is damaged and unusable.   Despite being insured it takes a huge effort to ensure new shirts and equipment etc. is ordered and ready on time before the start of the new season.

The club continues to grow, becoming the largest in the Macarthur district (a title that the club carried for a number of years).   Of course, with this is our quest for even more playing facilities and amenities, eventually again with continued pressure on council we are given the third basin.   The new amenities block and canteen is officially opened in 1995 by the mayor of Campbelltown.

1998 sees the addition of Home and Away change rooms to the building so we now have a canteen, toilets, equipment shed and Home and Away change rooms.

2005 and we finally have enough funds to lobby council to extend again and add a clubhouse, almost doubling the footprint of the building with a large open plan area for our clubhouse.

2015 time for a uniform change. Our club colours are retained, and the design freshened up. Sponsorship shirts are a huge hit and are a definite long-term addition.

2016 saw extensions to the canteen end of the club building with the addition of the BBQ area and a dedicated Groundskeeper shed.

2017 small step into the modern world with the adoption of Team App for all our teams to use and remain in touch with each other.

2017/2018 saw a large investment into the main basin (basin 3) with a full re-turf and drainage replacement. Extra light towers and an upgrade to 100 LUX lighting allowing the hosting of night games, rounded out with the erection of perimeter fencing

2019 as we finally move into the 21st century, the canteen gets modernised with the addition of EFTPOS facilities and a high-quality coffee machine. We also bought a bigger mower for our Groundsman, cutting down on time spend maintaining the field to a very high standard. New sensor footpath lighting between basin 2 and basin 3 were installed and currently work on basin 2 will see new 100 LUX lighting towers to be erected in time for our 2020 season. Our 2019 Girls U16 team were crowned Premiers and Champions
